How to Set Up Your Custom Domain

Author: Zhang Jian Posted 6 days ago 6 min read

When connecting your custom domain to our service (show.dev), it's important to follow a few key steps to ensure everything works smoothly. This guide will walk you through the process.

Root Domains Are Not Supported

First, a crucial point: we do not support root domains (e.g., yourdomain.com). This is because root domains typically cannot have a CNAME record pointing to our service, which is a necessary step for the custom domain to work correctly.

The Most Important Step: CNAME for www

The most critical part of setting up your custom domain is creating a CNAME record in your DNS settings. You need to point the www subdomain to yheart.showhost.dev.

Here’s what that looks like in your DNS provider's control panel:

  • Type: CNAME
  • Host/Name: www
  • Value/Target: yheart.showhost.dev

FYI, you can replace www with other values, e.g., blog.

Best Practice: 301 Redirect

To ensure a seamless experience for your visitors, we strongly recommend setting up a 301 redirect from your root domain to your www subdomain. For example, you should redirect yourdomain.com to www.yourdomain.com. This is a standard and recommended practice for many websites.

By following these steps, you'll have your custom domain set up correctly and ready to go.
